Checker board shade illusion

Professor Edward H Adelson produced this excellent optical illusion in 1995. Two areas highlighted in the clip seem to be a different shade, however, as the lady demonstrates, they are exactly the same. The visual uses several tricks to make sense of the world around us, however, sometimes these tricks can fool us.
