Motivation and Dopamine Release from Disinhibition in the VTA

The lateral hypothalamus (LH) sends an inhibitory projection to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) that modulates dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens (NAc). Optical stimulation of this projection can evoke different motivated behaviors depending on the context and environment.
