Iran for the rich looked like this in the 1970s. But most lived in poverty, despite a booming oil industry and were against the U.S.-backed Shah. He was replaced with Islamic leader Ayatollah Khomeini in the 1979 revolution. But days after a compulsory hijab ruling was introduced. Thousands marched in protest. But the government issued up to 70 lashes or months of imprisonment for disobeying. Women were deprived of basic rights and legal age of marriage for girls was reduced to 9, but later raised to 13.
